ZBD, the ‘epaper for retail’ specialist, has announced a new electronic shelf label (ESL), the epop 55, designed for the US and European hypermarket sectors: typically stores with over 40,000 SKUs.
The epop 55 offers almost double the screen area of comparable shelf edge displays on the market today. ZBD’s bistable LCD gives excellent image detail and unrivalled capability to display full graphical content such as logos and scannable barcodes.
Building on the success ZBD’s existing range of products, the epop 55 has been designed for large-format retail outlets that wish to convey more comprehensive information to their customers, particularly promotions, but also additional consumer advice and even competitor data.
Within the highly automated hypermarket environment, the larger screen will also be utilised when the displays are in
operational mode (eg: during replenishment periods) to convey remerchandising and management information graphically.
The epop 55 enables a fast return on investment (ROI) with its rich content display. Coupled with ZBD’s light touch infrastructure, it brings a highly functional and cost-effective solution for the specific needs of the US and European hypermarket sectors.
Jann Naef, Director of Product Marketing for ZBD, said “We have been working with innovative retailers in the USA and Europe to arrive at the design of the epop 55 so we are confident that the extra screensize and readability will deliver a great business tool to unlock the full benefits of epaper in retail.”
“Our customers benefit from accessing ZBD’s world-leading team of scientists and engineers dedicated to solving their needs.
Because the inventors of this technology are still part of our company today, we can respond rapidly to our US and European customers and partners and deliver more screen size and
functionality for little extra cost”said Naef.
As with ZBD’s epaper range, which comprises the epop 50, 300 and 500 (pictured),
the epop 55 is fully graphical and includes all the standard features of the epop 50.
It fits seamlessly into ZBD’s low-touch Bounce communication system, providing
retailers with a complete, integrated ESL solution. Each Bounce Communicator can
support thousands of updates per hour across a full store.

ZBD, the epaper for retail specialist, has announced a strategic partnership with ILID Pty Ltd, the Australian ESL (electronic shelf labels) market leader that will see elements of both companies’ retail display solutions combined to deliver an innovative solution powered by the ZBD Bounce RF communication system and data management applications.
The new solution integrates ILID’s segment displays with ZBD’s Bounce RF architecture, adding a low-cost segment display to ZBD’s portfolio of epaper products. Using Bounce as the platform to drive both segment displays and epaper displays, retailers will be able to operate a mixed estate of displays. The move will enable both companies to target previously untouched markets, capitalising on the new solution’s low touch infrastructure combined with the lowest cost ESL solution in the market today.
Shaun Gray said, “Our two companies have been working together for sometime to deliver a solution that brings together ZBD’s unique low touch infrastructure, ZBD’s market-leading bistable dot matrix display and ILID’s segment display. The market is already familiar with each technology and they understand the respective benefits. Our combined solution is, we believe, the most cost-effective technology available, which we know will appeal to markets previously unable to invest in ESL technology. This will be particularly attractive to those clients gradually migrating from segment displays, offering them a non-intrusive migration path“.
Commenting on the venture, Ralph Pickering, Director at ILID Pty Ltd said, “We
know that there is huge potential for our combined solution worldwide. With ZBD’s
minimal infrastructure requirements, and our cost-effective segment displays, it’s
a winning combination.”
ZBD and ILID will deliver the first installations of the combined solution in Q3 2010.
The venture will see the two companies working together to sell ZBD’s solution within
territories previously untouched by ZBD, including the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific
regions.

In December 2009, Delfi Technologies A/S started its cooperation with Lindbak Retail Systems. Already after 2 months, Delfi and Lindbak set the first retail store in operation with Breece System. It was COOP Jondal in Norway that was the first store.
Unlike installations of other electronic shelf labels, the store was able to maintain the daily operation and serve its customers while the Breece System was being installed. In that way, the installation and start-up of the 3700 electronic shelf labels could happen in just two days, without any disruption of the daily operation in the store.
At the same time, COOP Jondal's return on investment is fast, due to significant savings in operation costs and the many competitive advantages for the store.
Besides that the solution has been designed with a functional and highly flexible user interface, the exceptional and very unique values about the new generation of electronic shelf labels is that the store can combine everything from item text and images to barcodes and logos on the electronic shelf labels.
With Breece System it is also possible for a chain to implement central changes in price and product information quickly and easily in all the shops - at the same time.
Because of the solution with electronic shelf labels, the COOP Jondal store is now able to eliminate pricing errors and reduce queue time at the cash function (check out) because there will be 100 % accuracy and price integrity between the price indication on the epops and in the check out function.
At the same time, the store can use its existing IT system to upload and update the epops with relevant merchandising information.
Forward-looking, both sides in the collaboration believe that the first installation at COOP Jondal will lead to greater cooperation in the delivery of electronic shelf lables to more COOP stores.
